Alexander Camaro’s extensive body of work encompasses painting, printmaking, drawings, collages, dance, film and text. His early visual works primarily explore the themes of the circus, variety shows, the stage and theatre – elements of Camaro’s world at that time. From the 1950s onwards, Camaro devoted himself increasingly to abstract painting. Sharply defined forms and symbols characterise his work. From 1955 onwards, Camaro received commissions for art in public spaces. Among other projects, this led to the installation of the coloured glass blocks at the Berlin Philharmonic (1963) and the Berlin State Library (1974/75), created in collaboration with ceramic artist Susanne Riée.
